Five Interior Design Trends We See in 2021

and how to use these trends in your home

I have been around long enough in design to remember mauve as the ’it’ color. And you know what?  We are in a boomerang design phase where people don’t remember the burgundy and mauves of the past and we have a new IT color!  But like most of you, I crave new designs and colors. I am so happy to see the waning of 50 shades of grey.

“Trends, as I see it for 2021, are moving in my kind of mood. I have always loved color and texture, and the super clean lines can complement this design style.” -Anastasia

Here are five design trends I’m seeing for 2021 and how you can use them in your home.

Comfort – Comfortable furniture for the win! Deep sofas are paired with down-filled pillows so you sink into luxury. As we are all using our homes so much more these days, we want that extra bit of fluff in our lives. And stuck at the dining room table working on Zoom for hours can cause lots of sore muscles. So go flop on that super comfy sofa and relax!

Texture and natural materials – the sleek and clean modern appearance is losing to natural textures and materials. Use natural woods as foundation pieces, such as a coffee table or end tables. Consider a side table of raffia, grass cloth, or other textured material. Select accessories that provide interesting textures to complement nature.

Color – Who doesn’t love pink? Okay, some people, but there are so many different pinks and they’re not all bubble-gum. It’s not a feminine only color either. Paired with blues, greys, and even black pink can be soothing. It is just a bit of punch (yes – pink can punch!) that any room can use.  Jewel tones are back in a big way, but instead of being paired together  90’s-style, they are now partnered with texture and natural materials that have modern lines.  Consider using a burgundy velvet on a modern line clean sofa like we have paired here at our project #thestoneleigh23.

Our Environment– I have worked in sustainability for more than 20 years and it was never unimportant. But the trends wax and wane over time and sustainability as a trend goes in and out of fashion.  The Gen Xers and Gen Y are concerned about our planet, and their buying power is pushing trends. (Go Green!)  Do you know where your furniture was manufactured? Is it local, and made from sustainably harvested lumber? Wool, down and feathers provide natural stuffing materials to create luxuriously soft comfort for floor cushions or toss pillows. Opt for organically grown corn- soy- and cotton-based fiber filling as eco-friendly alternatives to polyester pillow stuffing.

Botanicals  – Birds, Twigs, and Flowers, Oh My!  As we are stuck inside more these days we are finding ways to bring nature in.  Working from home and wish you could enjoy your days “outside?”  Well, consider wallcovering with flowers in soft colors – and don’t forget to throw in a hint of pink we mentioned earlier.

So there you go – five trends for 2021 that are easy to incorporate into your own home.

1 | COMFORT
2 | TEXTURE AND NATURAL MATERIALS
